Winterbadeschiff

Year-Round Floating Wellness Space. The Winterbadeschiff encloses Berlin’s pool with a lightweight membrane, creating a sauna and lounge while preserving views of the Spree.

[ OVERVIEW ]

Due to the great success of the open-air Badeschiff on the River Spree in Berlin, the client expressed the desire to make the facility usable year-round by creating a winter version of the Badeschiff. During the colder months, the pool — originally designed for summer use — was to be transformed into a sauna landscape with a covered pool, bar, and lounge.

The solution: a pneumatic roof membrane structure with large window surfaces, which not only provides excellent insulation but also maintains panoramic views of the urban surroundings. The translucent PVC membranes allow generous daylight illumination of the interior space. In addition, they create an appealing play of light through nighttime interior lighting that radiates outward, giving the impression that the entire wellness area hovers above the Spree like a glowing UFO.

BDA:

The striking ensemble of three longitudinal, translucent tubes floating in the Spree represents a cost-effective and efficient construction. This solution was realized with a very limited financial budget. At the same time, the construction method allows for an extremely economical assembly and disassembly. Only standard elements were used, which — intelligently adapted for this unusual purpose — enable installation without cranes or major technical effort.

The double-layer pneumatic PVC membrane minimizes the weight of the enclosure while providing optimal thermal insulation. All technical and sanitary components are integrated as simple sandwich constructions into the three spatial sequences of lounge, sauna-massage deck, and swimming pool.

The spatial fascination of the literally inexpensive Winterbadeschiff is accompanied by a design of high architectural quality, representing a thoughtful intervention on a former inner-city wasteland that contributes to the dynamic development of its surroundings.
